Inn at Loretto Santa Fe Artist in Residence Program

Artwork by the Children of Lighthouse Exhibit and Fundraiser

Brad Smith Gallery is proud to present an exhibit of artwork by children from the Lighthouse Children’s Home in Chennai, India. All the artwork on display is available for sale by donation (minimum donation $25) and 100% of the proceeds will go to the orphanage.

Note from Jessamine:

Each year in January, my husband and I travel with a group of volunteers from New Mexico to Chennai, India to volunteer with the amazing kids at the Lighthouse Children’s Home, an orphanage outside of the city. Before coming to the home, these children have dealt with misfortunes such as malnutrition, the loss of parents, and homelessness. At Lighthouse, they are provided with food, clothing, education, medical care, love and hope. The kids greet us every year with the biggest smiles and the most amazing joy for life that I have ever seen and every year I feel the same way…that even though I am the “volunteer”, they have given me so much…so much love and inspiration.

Some volunteers coach soccer, others bring books and computers. I teach art classes.This past January, Lauren Greenfield and I brought suitcases full of art supplies and conducted art classes and open studio sessions with the children there. They absolutly love to draw and paint, collage and create crafts. I brought along an art history book including photos of works spanning from Leonardo da Vinci to Matisse to some very contemporary artists…the kids absolutely loved it and you can see how some of these masters have already influenced the kid’s art!

I can feel fall approaching

What an incredible, exciting and busy summer! It was great seeing so many of our amazing collectors here these past two months and so much fun showing them around our new space!

The days are getting shorter and a bit cooler. It’s actually my favorite time of year here in Santa Fe. There’s nothing like the smell of chilies roasting and the ephemeral yellow leaves of the aspens near the ski basin.

Brad captures this time of year so perfectly in his paintings of these aspens. Here is his newest, “Heart of Gold.”

July has been wild. Moving into our new space, we have taken on 4 new artists, and it’s the busiest time of year on Canyon Road. Lots of long days at the gallery. OOOOOoooo… I love the excitement and the pressure! Brad, Lauren and I did take a night off and go to the opera. We saw La Boheme….beautiful! Of course, lots of collectors come into town for the opera and it’s been lovely seeing all of you. Brad has been working on some gorgeous new work and Lisa Linch is our current guest artist so be sure to come by soon! Check out this new Smith/Linch collaboration. Titled, what else? ”Santa Fe Opera”
