Our new location at 714 Canyon Road

About the Gallery

Brad Smith and Sachi Oba have collaborated for the past six years toward the goal of being able to show the full range of Smith's artistic output in quintessential Canyon Road surroundings. With hard work, confident patience, and ample talent, they have achieved that goal twice, the more recent being their move to a larger, ideally situated location. The new space is in a historic adobe building with perfect attributes for the contemporary romantic paintings he creates, all on the premises.

A name change from Brad Smith Fine Art to Smith Oba Fine Art produces a more mellifluous name and most importantly, acknowledges the ongoing and indispensible contributions Ms. Oba has made as partner in the gallery, in the development of Brad Smith's fine art career, and in their life together.

Brad and Sachi opened Brad Smith Fine Art in 2006. Building on the steady success Brad has enjoyed with his paintings since moving his easel to Santa Fe in 2001, Brad and Sachi have worked their way up the Santa Fe art scene from unknown status to owning a beautiful gallery in the heart of Canyon Road. Smith Oba Fine Art exclusively shows Brad's visually and emotionally rich paintings in a charming, comfortable environment. Brad does all his painting in the gallery, giving patrons the opportunity to meet him, watch him work, and see the soft-spoken, intelligent, perceptive, and down-to-earth man behind all those amazing paintings. Brad creates the art. Sachi attends to the business aspects of the gallery. "Sachi takes care of everything," Brad says, "including me."

Sachi was born in LaRoque sur Ceze, France, an 11th century stone village. Her father, stone sculptor Toru Oba, had worked his way from Japan across the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, to a three-year apprenticeship repairing and restoring ancient archictecure with local stone masons. He then moved his family to the Virginia, where his work with stone eventually brought him into association with the Lama Foundation in New Mexico, affording Sachi an early and abiding appreciation for the state. A dancer, Sachi has worked on both sides of the camera in the film industries of Germany, Spain, and Austria, India, and the US. Soon after moving to Santa Fe she met Brad Smith at the Second Street Studios, where both were living and working.

Brad and Sachi by nature foster a relaxed, elegant mood in the gallery-Brad with his paintings and easygoing personality and Sachi with her gentle nature and facility with getting things done right. They had been looking for the right person to join their team, and one day Jenny Dove came in. She felt herself a part of the gallery from the moment she walked in, attuned to the art, the space, and the uplifting emotional charge of the whole ensemble. Jenny grew up in New Jersey, in a family immersed in art. After majoring in Film Theory and Music at the College of Santa Fe, Jenny moved to Los Angeles, where she worked as a writer, performer, and figure model. Jenny Dove built up a nice following with jazz and blues song stylings on the Southern California cabaret circuit. After eight years she came to Santa Fe to regroup, found this great gallery. Jenny joins Brad and Sachi in welcoming you to Smith Oba Fine Art. We hope our website will persuade you to accept our open invitation to savor the art and ambience in person.
